Where Does Time Go?

Time…

Here’s a video showing, based on ‘check-ins’ how this cohort of a few thousand people, spend their time per day.

(from this website if you want to see it clearer. I put things IN the site so it’s still there for you no matter what else happens on the inter-webs).

I know the text is hard to see… It reads (from Noon down the right around to the very top again)

Then in the center it says “Traveling”

The reason I’m showing this to you is to emphasize how much leisure time people spend, yet everyone complains they don’t have enough time.

Want to know a secret?

You have ALL the time there is.

Many individuals are still at a loss of how to manage their time effectively. You can always hear them saying “If only I can have more time, I can do more”.

They forget all of us are given the same 24 hours a day, yet some individuals are more productive than others. The reason behind is that productive individuals know how to manage their time effectively.

Now, the question is how can you manage your time effectively?

Good news! I’ve got your answer for you.

You can manage your time effectively by learning the skills of knowing how to set your goals and by planing your day each morning.

“Never begin your day until you finish it on paper.” – Jim Rohn

Great advice Jim…

So start your day by setting goals.

Clear goals can be broken down into discreet steps, with your action plan in it.

The next skill you need is PRIORITIZING – focusing on urgent and important tasks rather than those not important or don’t move you towards your goals; organizing your work schedule; list making to remind you of what you need to do when; persevering when things are not working out and avoiding procrastination.

Here, I’d like to introduce you to neat little things which I KNOW make me infinitely more productive: “Poms” or “The Pomodoro Technique.”

The Pomodoro Technique is a time management method developed by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s. … These intervals are named pomodoros, the plural in English of the Italian word pomodoro (tomato), after the tomato-shaped kitchen timer that Cirillo used as a university student.

Basically a “pom” is a 25min block of work..

Where Does Time Go?

You can see above, I wrote down my top 3 items to achieve for the day on the right… With the MOST important task of the day listed FIRST… then a target # of ‘poms’ to spend doing each.

When you start a pom, you shut your phone off, all distractions off and the only thing you do it.. that one thing.

It takes time and training to get used to… But you’ll get WAAAAY more done doing things like this than without it.

Sometimes you don’t complete the project… Despite doing all the poms you set up to achieve… but then you don’t need to stress out for no reason, because you know you did the best you could…

Do you know who wins gold medals at the Olympics?

The best time managers because to be best you need to put in more hours of practice than anybody else.

It really is that simple.

It’s not easy, but it’s simple.

If someone wants to beat me at my martial arts – consistently.. they need to have had more hours of training than me…

Could take them 1 year, 3 years, 10 years.. doesn’t matter… It’s about hours invested… How fast they invest those hours is up the them and their time management skills.

Which is why I plan my day every morning and divide it into 30min pieces. Tons of research has shown these “poms” to be the most effective at helping people be productive consistently.

Then using 30min blocks I can be realistic about travel time, breaks, meetings & conversations… I’m not always ON time with my schedule… But it helps me prioritize and evaluate options versus constantly being pulled left & right into things I didn’t plan.. Or are NOT in my top 3 priorities for the day.

Here’s my daily tracking sheet you can use for yourself. Simply click to download the spreadsheet here and clone the tab for every new day. Once it gets too full, I just start a new doc.

In fact, why don’t you click “start” on Tomato Timer right now and use the next 25min to complete your unfinished tasks for me.

Where Does Time Go?

A successful person like Benjamin Franklin, the father of time, knows how to manage his time properly. He is in fact one of the most accomplished men in America. Bifocals for eyeglasses lenses, the lightning Rod that aims to protect buildings and ships from lightning damage, are just a couple of the inventions he created.

However, Benjamin Franklin’s Breakthrough Discovery was Time Management.

He was thoroughly convinced that THE most powerful instrument of success, which a person may command, is their time. He says he won’t propose to change time nature. He just figured out how to multiply the potential of his day.

It is leveraging time.

But hey, you don’t have to be Benjamin Franklin to be able to accomplish more each day.

All you need to do is follow these tips and also analyze how you spend your time and have a ready to-do list serving as your guide to see and evaluate what you have accomplished for the day.

Being able to manage your time effectively means freedom and having control of your life.
